Domino investigation

This morning, a group of able mathematicians from years 3, 4 and 5 worked to solve a problem involving dominoes.  They were told that Amy had 24 dominoes which had a total of 125 spots.  They had to find out which dominoes were missing.  All pairs successfully found the solution - eventually!

Mr Widdeson came into school this week to work with us in preparation for high school mathematics. We worked on fun, challenging algebra calculations. Some of our work is below!

Key Stage 2 Gifted and Talented Maths Morning

At the beginning of December a group of Key Stage 2 children took part in a special workshop for able mathematicians.  Children from years 3 to 6 worked together on solving problems, which required them to work systematically. Here are some examples of the problems children solved.

Cover the Camel

At the beginning of December a group Key Stage 1 children took part in a work shop for able mathematicians. The problem solving activities gave the children the opportunity to work collaboratively together and to develop the skill of visualisation. 

In the first challenge the children were given 7 shapes and were told that each shape fitted somewhere in the picture. After much debate and several attempts each group completed the Tangrams.

Next the children were shown these (see below)

They were asked to cut out the pieces and move them around until each piece fitted inside the camel. At the end of the session each pair had completed the challenge.
